at least, according to an old friend who lives in Anchorage now.
Palin was elected because her views then were moderate-conservative, and she tapped into the desire to get rid of the old bunch who had run Alaska for too long. While she gets all the noise, it's largely overlooked that moderates from both parties were elected at the same time for the same reasons.
She retained her popularity up until she quit, and that ended it for Alaskans. Folks up there hates a quitter way bad!

which is one reason why she quit. It ain't about the politics but the celebrity. Now she gets to come down to give $100,000 speeches to five hundred sycophants, including a rare interaction with reporters with pre-screened questions and still she screws it up. Yet she gets to dominate the media narrative like nobody else precisely because she looks like a train wreck waiting to happen. And her feeding cycle continues completely unencumbered by making any singular policy decision that would have measurable consequences. She could pick her nose on camera and the media punditry would ponder the size and consistency of her boogers for three days.
Alaskans don't want her
